Our school
Montessori Córdoba International School is located on a 2,500 m2 plot of land on the outskirts of Córdoba, surrounded by garden areas and trees and in easy reach of the town centre and popular family-friendly suburbs. We have a bus route on our doorstep. The first phase converted a family home into a modern Montessori environment with three spacious, open and fully equipped classrooms. In 2019 the second phase of development involved the construction of a new building specially designed as a Montessori school with five magnificent additional classrooms.
We enjoy 550m2 of spacious indoor classrooms along with another 200m2 of terraces for the children’s outdoor classrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, administration areas all surrounded by 1,500m2 of attractive play areas.
Each classroom in our school is like a home; It has large windows with views of nature, a terrace area for working on outdoor activities , a small kitchen where children manage their food and mealtimes, and all the specialised material children need to assimilate the concepts and develop the skills outlined in the International Montessori Curriculum.
Outdoor learning is a very important part of the daily life of Montessori Córdoba. All our classes have an outdoor classroom, where each child can freely go to work at any time of the day. These spaces are surrounded by trees, plants and nature; Some of them also offer a spectacular and inspiring view of Córdoba and its mountains.
The only sound that accompanies them is the rustling of leaves on the trees and the singing of birds. These areas contribute and enhance the health and well-being of children at school.
We also have our own patch of forest, an outdoor theater area, relaxation areas and abundant sports areas and play spaces.
We do many activities for our families to participate in their children’s school life.
There are the orientation sessions for Montessori pedagogy; series of workshops where we learn more about children’s education at home and at school; the school committees through which parents can, if they want, share their time, ideas and knowledge about the evolution of the project; observation days; the open house day for families and much more.
Each Montessori Córdoba family contributes according to their availability and preferences to make our school and their children’s education an extension of their home.
Outdoor play and exploration in a natural, peaceful environment are essential for a child’s well-being and healthy growth. Our garden is full of life: with a wide variety of plants, olive and fruit trees, flowers, insects and birds.
We enjoy 7 play areas: two of them are reserved and equipped for the use of the little ones. There is also a play garden, a sports area, the forest, a bench area and another theater area. We value free play and, therefore, we provide many natural elements that are perfect for awakening children’s imagination and play in our garden.
Our forest area is the perfect place for children to explore nature at school. Primary children use the space for research projects, while our youngest students can search and identify the life in the forest and see how it changes with the different seasons of the year. There are many elements of manipulation and every day… a new form or creation appears! Our students love this time of play and imaginative adventure in the forest.
Our team
I am Lucy Welsted, founder and director of the Montessori International School Córdoba. Originally from Yorkshire, England, I have professional experience in British early childhood and primary education and teaching English as a foreign language. This is complemented by an AMI Elementary certification and a Master’s Degree in Comprehensive Montessori School Leadership. I have spent half my life in Córdoba, where I fell in love with the quality of life and found love with my husband. Becoming a mother of three daughters deepened my concerns about conventional educational models. It became clear to me that if I wanted to provide my family and the children of Córdoba with a high-quality, comprehensive and respectful bilingual education, I would have to establish a school. That dream has become a reality thanks to the collective effort and support of everyone involved in the project. I am bilingual in English and Spanish, and I am creative but rational, I have vision, but I am pragmatic, above all I have a deep passion for learning, understanding and promoting positive transformation in people and society.
It has always been a pleasure to welcome local and international families and professionals interested in learning more about Montessori education. Montessori education remains deeply relevant today despite being established over a century ago. The Montessori educational philosophy resonates with me: I am a positive and hopeful person who needs the support of scientific evidence and rigorous academic analysis of educational methods before I trust them enough to shape the lives of the children in my care.
When you ask me why Montessori, I firmly believe that Montessori education, guided by dedicated professionals passionate about their work, empowers children to develop their potential and gives them the hope, skills and strength to become adults who dare to change the world. My journey in education began more than 20 years ago and Montessori has deeply impacted my life over the past decade, opening a path of wisdom, hope and love for my family and the families in our community.
Surrounded by people motivated to improve the lives of children in Córdoba and with the hope that these children will live a future of compassion and peace and contribute to improving living conditions on earth. I hope my contribution is a model and inspiration for others who share these goals.
I’m a qualified Montessori Infant Community Guide and AMI Montessori Assistant for 3-12-year-olds. I am also a licensed speech therapist and special education teacher. For 20 years, I have been dedicated to helping children in Córdoba reach their potential in schools and therapy settings. The last nine years have been dedicated to Montessori education, and I previously managed a child therapy centre. What motivates me most in my work at Montessori Cordoba is observing how the educational approach allows each child to discover the world without artificially imposed restrictions which impede the development of a healthy sense of self.
I decided to study a Montessori qualification and dedicate myself to this work because I felt a great need to find a pedagogy more aligned with human development, far from the dissonances I observed in other schools. I believe every adult working with children should be trained in this methodology.
My daily mission in my work is to help children, families and staff however I can, while my overarching mission is to help others connect with themselves and find well-being.
I was born in Córdoba, and my roots are Mediterranean, specifically from the Valencian Community. I speak Spanish and English at an upper-intermediate level.
I strive to bring compassion, empathy and enthusiasm to the Montessori Córdoba community daily.
My name is Julia Carranza, and I have extensive experience in administration and education. I am a qualified primary school teacher specialising in English as a foreign language. I’m also qualified as an environmental educator, a Montessori assistant for children aged 0 to 6 years old, and as an administrative assistant. I have had the privilege of working in the educational field for 8 years. Of these, 3 years have been dedicated to Montessori education as assistant guide in several centres.
What motivates me most in my work with children is witnessing their growth, development, and learning, helping them overcome challenges, and discovering their unique abilities. I always learn with them, which is such an enriching experience.
I am originally from Córdoba, although I have spent part of my life living in Extremadura (Cáceres) and abroad, in cities like Brighton or Bournemouth in England. After the pandemic, I decided to return to Córdoba in search of tranquility and stability. I love the city for its beauty, quiet atmosphere, and proximity to other cities in Andalucia. Cordoba’s people are so friendly and welcoming.
My interest in Montessori education arose from its holistic approach, which prioritises each child’s individuality and independence. I was drawn to its emphasis on hands-on learning and self-directed exploration.
I decided to study a Montessori qualification and dedicate myself to working in a school like Montessori Córdoba where I firmly believe in its educational approach. My daily mission is to create a nurturing environment from administration where everyone feels valued and empowered to learn and grow together.
My greatest goal in my work is to contribute to transformative change in education, supporting each child’s development and fostering their safety, curiosity, and compassion.
I have received support from teachers, classmates, and parents who share my passion for education, but children are the constant source of inspiration and motivation to achieve excellence in our shared mission.
For five years, my professional career focused on accounting and administration management roles in a hotel on the Costa del Sol. This experience was fundamental in developing and improving my administrative and communication skills, especially in English and Spanish. Every day, I was immersed in situations requiring numerical precision and fluid and effective communication in both languages. Today, I find myself in a new career chapter, working as an administrator at Montessori Cordoba. I deeply appreciate this opportunity and am grateful for the continuous learning that I have in my work environment. Hi there, I’m Anita, and I’ve been immersed in the world of education for over 13 years now. My journey began with a passion for guiding children in their learning adventures. My name is Denise Prestes Fernandes. My relevant qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, another in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Montessori Education 3-6 (MACTE). I have worked in education for 18 years, always dedicated to Montessori education. I am originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil. I decided to come to Córdoba in search of a better quality of life after having lived my entire life in a megacity. I was hired to work at Montessori Córdoba after looking for a Montessori school in Spain, and I haven’t looked back since.
I love witnessing the children’s ability to absorb knowledge, like sponges soaking up water. Their environment significantly influences their interactions and development. I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to sculpt this environment and create the right conditions for its optimal growth. It is what motivates me most in my work.
My interest in this pedagogical approach was sparked when I got my first job as an assistant in a Montessori Children’s House at a small international school in Sao Paulo. I was so impressed by the level of independence that the very young children had. The beauty and impeccable organisation of the environment left a lasting impression on me, as did the genuine care the children showed for their surroundings.
After working for a few years as an assistant at the Montessori school, I accepted a new job at a traditional international school. The disparity between the two educational approaches became evident. It was a great school, but it did not give children the independence and self-regulation skills they learn in Montessori. Consequently, a significant portion of our time was spent addressing disciplinary issues among students. That’s when I knew Montessori was the way to go for me.
My daily mission in my work is to provide each child with the appropriate conditions to reach their maximum potential. Beyond that, my mission is to change the perception of education and help people understand that the learning process comes primarily from the student, not the teacher.

Hello, I’m Lola, a Children’s Community Guide certified by the International Montessori Association (AMI) for ages 0 to 3 years. In addition, I have experience as a classroom director of early childhood education and an assistant and parent advisor for the childhood stage from 0 to 6 years old.
For 12 years, I have worked with children from 0 to 6 years old, especially focused on those from 0 to 3 years old, and under the Montessori approach for the last 10 years.
My interest in Montessori arose from the need to find a more stimulating and respectful pedagogy with the child’s development after not feeling satisfied with traditional pedagogy. Training as a Montessori guide was a natural step for me since I consider that Montessori is more than an educational method; it is a philosophy of life.
What motivates me most is creating a safe and happy environment where children can learn and explore freely. I am excited to witness their development and be their guide in this process. I am Spanish, and I live in Montoro, a town in Córdoba, where I live with my beautiful family. I have an upper intermediate level in English.

My name is Jane Plunkett and I’m originally from Dublin, Ireland, specifically from a suburb called Blackrock, near the sea. I have been in Córdoba since 2010, accompanying my husband from Córdoba. I have two children, and what I like most is raising them with a relaxed, safe and outdoor lifestyle.
I am a Montessori AMI Elementary Guide. Before finding this path, I was dedicated to teaching English and journalism. I have dedicated 14 years to education, of which 5 have been in the Montessori field.
My interest in Montessori arose from having children, both of whom are students here at the school. Initially, I learned everything I could about the methodology through my own curiosity and research, and later, my husband, friends, and the school supported me in achieving my dream of becoming a Montessori Guide.
What motivates me most in my work with children is the purposeful, happy classroom atmosphere, the independence we encourage, and seeing how children can learn with enthusiasm and joy.

Hello, I’m Laura and my career in education spans 16 rewarding years. I ventured into teaching with a qualification to teach English as a second language and then furthered my experience with a degree in Primary Education. I worked for 6 years as a primary education teacher, choosing disadvantaged neighbourhoods to ensure my work would have the greatest impact. I also worked coordinating a project with the Scottish Ministry of Education to promote second language learning in Scottish primary schools. My fascination with Montessori principles led me to seek certifications in this transformative approach: I have a certification as a Montessori Elementary Guide and am currently completing studies for the AMI 6-12 diploma.

I have worked in education for 9 years and I really enjoy building connections with the children I work with and seeing their confidence, self-esteem, and learning flourish over time. I grew up in the Black Country near Birmingham, England.
My family first came to Córdoba in 2007 to teach English. We fell in love with the city and made many friends. In 2018, we returned to live permanently with our children because Córdoba is a wonderful place for them to spend their childhood in a safe, family-oriented culture.

Of course, it’s not like cleaning a typical classroom: each classroom is like a house, with so many materials and activities, you can’t get bored here! I am interested in the Montessori method because of the importance it places on autonomy and the comprehensive development of children, and I think it is wonderful that food is part of that learning process.
My daily mission is to offer balanced, tasty and appealing meals for children. My main goal is for children to enjoy food as a positive, healthy and shared experience, and to learn from an early age to value good nutrition so that this will stay with them throughout their lives.
Along the way, my family has been a great support, always believing in me, as have my colleagues, who have taught me and motivated me to continue growing every day.
I would describe myself as organised, meticulous and cheerful.
